Artist’s Quote:

The work addresses the critical rethinking of the Soviet past, particularly the law of August 7, 1932, «On the Protection of Property of State Enterprises, Collective Farms and Cooperatives and the Strengthening of Public (Socialist) Property,» better known as the «Law of Three Spikelets». This document intensified the tragic consequences of the Holodomor. As an artistic image, I use a matchbox organizer—a recognizable artifact of the Soviet era, for me a symbol of a small container holding an enormous layer of memory. Its form also references panel housing familiar to anyone from the post-Soviet space. The black soot in the work becomes a metaphor for pages of history forever darkened—both by past tragedies and the shadow of new war.

This object is the tenth piece in a series of container-boxes where I collect Soviet and post-Soviet artifacts of human memory. I began this project in 2024 while in emigration.

The Soviet era, its events and figures, represents for me the source and root of many contemporary problems in my country of birth. Working on this series, I strive toward critical understanding of the totalitarian legacy left to us by an empire that formally disappeared but continues to influence the post-Soviet space.
